So fam,
To answer your question, nope, I have not yet seen conference. We'll watch it next week at church. (The props of serving in the international ward: I get to see it in English.) All I know is that the first Thai person was called to be a member of the 70, and that they did not announce a temple in Thailand. ): Oh well, next conference.
Other memorable things: I talked with this little girl from Australia, she is the cutest thing. I saw her on a train ( I take trains everywhere.) I usually talk with the mom, but I wanted to talk with her, so I asked her name. It was strange name, she was four and she told me her dad was coming to her house with the Easter Bunny. I was so chatting her up, I asked her how her dad knew the Easter bunny, and she was so excited; so she was in the middle of telling me how the Easter Bunny's been to her house before, when she tells me, "You know what? I love you!" and she hugged me. I was like WHITE HANDBOOK. [mom's note: the handbook clearly states you cannot hug children] but she was too cute. So we talked a little more, she hugged me again, told me I could come to her house, kissed me on the cheek, and at that moment I had to go because we were at our stop. I was so sad, because I never got to give her mom anything. ): Oh well, maybe she will always remember Mormons are awesome. As it turns out, I really needed that hug later in the day for reasons I won't bore you with.
We also had another baptism! Yay! Too bad - now we have no investigators with a baptismal date. We baptized them all.
I'm glad you all are safe and did not die by tornado. I love you all, and wish I had more happen this week, but it was really quiet.
Love,
Sister Barber
p.s. we are teaching a bunch of Chinese people right now. I learned how to say Heavenly Father. And that's about it. I don't know how well they all will progress though. ):
Culture thing: Thai people do not understand the concept of frosting. If you buy a cake from almost any bakery they have this not-very-sweet, jelly-like thing they put on it. Random, and odd.
Spiritual lesson: We can find joy in any time of our lives. You're sick, you're tired, you're busy, you're not sure what will happen tomorrow, you're mad, and you just want to be un-Christ-like, you're hungry, you're depressed, no-one wants to be baptized, you feel no one cares, all of these things won't stop you from having joy, if you place your trust in God.
You may not be happy, but I have learned there is a major difference between being happy, and having joy. Happiness is fleeting, some people even feel happy while they break the commandments of God, but joy does not leave as long as faith and hope are present. It is like a fire burning gently, reminding you that God is real. Sorry for more sap.
Love you all so much.
